THE HISTORY OF THE BARNSTAPLE AND MINEHEAD RAILWAY

passenger coaches

The carriages supplied to the railway are of high quality and fitted with roller bearings. They are illuminated by acetylene
lamps and acetylene generators are fitted to the coaches. Initially, the generators were removed during the summer months but once the extension to Minehead came into operation, lights are left on due to the long tunnels. Only some coaches used during winter are fitted with steam heating.

Some compartments can be divided off by sliding partitions. First class upholstery is in blue cloth for non-smoking and brown leather for smoking compartments.

During the course of their lives, some minor modifications inevitably have taken place.

Following the construction of coach No 17, the new coaches for the Minehead section developed a trend for increased length. Coaches 8048/49/50 are high density seven compartment thirds and are the longest coaches running on the system. In addition, in a further attempt to attract passengers back to the line, a Pullman coach was ordered and entered service in 1929. This coach does seem to be well patronised. It is likely that further Pullmans might have been built if the railway had not changed direction and introduced railcars. The Pullman coach is the only unit to be fitted with 24 volt electric light.

Following the introduction of railcars, it is likely that many of these coaches will be shortly withdrawn.
