COUNTY GATE - ELECTROSTATIC GRASS

making an electrostatic grass tool

This article was sadly in Dutch, but the following sequence should explain it well enough. Thanks to Keith Angus for the translation.

You need an electric fly swat

and a tea strainer

Remove the batteries from the electric fly swat and dismantle the handle.

Cut two wires off the "racket" of the fly swat  but keep

The next step is optional. If you want a high power version you will need to do this.

Bridge the resistor in series with the capacitor (resistor A) with a bit of wire, and remove the resistor in parallel with the capacitor (resistor B) entirely.

Solder a wire to the metal of the strainer:

Cut the handle of the tea strainer a bit shorter, drill two holes

Fit the strainer to the flyswat handle

One wire from the fly swat connects to one wire of the tea strainer, and attach a long wire with (for example) a croc clip to the other wire:

Fix with a bit of tape, but ensure the two wires cannot touch each other. Fix everything permanently in the handle with adhesive. I filled the space with sheet plastic which is neater and better. Paint it black and fix firmly:

Fit everything back together.

Note! Did you make the high power version? There is one small disadvantage: if you release the fly swat button, the tea strainer is still charged. You must discharge it by shorting it to the earthing screw before you touch the strainer.

And now your home-made static model grass layer is ready! Is that simple or is that simple? Now fit the batteries.

Now you can lay grass. Prepare an area for grass with paint or adhesive and fit a screw. The free wire connects to the screw

Put some grass in your tea strainer and shake (while you press the button on the fly swat) the grass from a short distance. Not too high, better closer

And here is your grass! It stands beautifully upright. Leave it to dry then clean of the loose grass with a vacuum cleaner.
